Florida - Nov. 2003First, a trip to the southwest coast, including Sanibel and Captiva Islands, and the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Then, over to South Beach for some price gouging. Finally, we return to central Florida for a cruise on the St. John's River.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

DSC_0117.jpg

Run by the Audobon Society, this slice of native Florida is located east of Naples, FL. A two-mile boardwalk provides an easy way to view this primordial swamp, which is habitat for a plethora of species of plants and animals. Some good gator pictures inside.

St. John's River

DSC_0047.jpg

What happens when I rent a boat at Hontoon Landing and cruise the St. Johns River in north central Florida? A lot of pictures of birds, reptiles, and the occasional cow! These photos were taken during two different such outings, one in March and the other in November.

Here and There Around Florida

Around Florida - 09.jpg

While Barb was in Florida, I took the opportunity to travel around the state and show her some of our "native" scenery, which to a British Columbian, is kind of exotic, sort of. Here are some photos from the east coast, the west coast, and the center of Florida, including Captiva Island and Anna Maria Island.

Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

DSC_0147.jpg

The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest in extreme Western North Carolina was dedicated in 1936, 18 years after the death of the famed poet whose most memorable poem was emtitled Trees. This untouched old growth forest is replete with huge trees, especially the giant poplars of Poplar Cove. I was truly impressed and I felt that it was well worth the long drive to this quiet corner of North Carolina.

Linville Gorge and Dry Falls

NC Fall 2003 - 08.jpg

Friend Barb and I headed east from the middle of nowhere, Tennessee, to enjoy some of my favorite scenery, which was enhanced by the fall foliage being near its peak. The pictures in this album are from Linville Gorge and Dry Falls, both in western North Carolina.

In Search of Rhododendrons

NC Spring 2003 - 20.jpg

I really, really needed to get away for a while. I had a grueling May and it was starting to get hot in Florida. I knew where to go. The mountains beckoned. Here are some pictures from my quest for spring blooming rhododendrons. I got there a little late but nevertheless did some hiking in places like Craggy Gardens, Mount Mitchell, and Roan Mountain (where I finally found the blooming rhododendrons!).

Point Reyes and Muir Woods

100ND100-0072_DSC.jpg

These two natural areas in Marin County always attract me when I am in the area. The giant redwoods in Muir Woods shade the valley bottom, but a short hike to the rim gets you above the redwoods to where the sun shines. Point Reyes had a variety of scenery and many, many miles of hiking trails on which to view this great, natural area.

North Carolina 2002In June 2002, I visted Linville Falls, North Carolina with some rock climbing friends. I'm not a rock climber, but I was there to enjoy some hiking in the mountains while the crag climbers did their thing. I liked the Linville Gorge area so much that I made an excuse to return to North Carolina less than two weeks later, this time visiting Stone Mountain State Park.

Palm Canyon - Anza Borrego Desert

pc-10.jpg

Another place I visited on my December 2001 vacation was the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, west of San Diego, California. This park encompasses a huge desert area. One particular part of the desert that intrigued me is called Palm Canyon. This is a palm oasis in the midst of a very stark low desert. I walked about a mile and a half over rocky, barren desert terrain. Then, suddenly, the scenery changed to almost a tropical paradise: palm trees, falling water, and blessed shade! On the way back, a storm rolled in over the mountains, which enabled me to get a shot of a rather interesting sky over the desert. While I did not manage to spot any of the bighorn sheep that live in the hills surrounding this desert, I was able to get some nice photos to remember this place by.

Rhyolite, Nevada

rrv-03.jpg

I had been to Rhyolite a year earlier (pre hip surgery). This is a ghost town a couple of hours from Las Vegas that died when it became too expensive to mine gold. At one time, in the early 20th century, it was the third largest city in Nevada. A group of artists from Belgium come to Rhyolite every year to create desert sculptures. You'll find some pictures of their work here, along with photos of the famous bottle house (a house made from beer bottles and mortar), and other pictures of Rhyolite.

Titus Canyon and Death Valley California

dv-15.jpg

Driving west from Rhyolite, Nevada, one quickly encounters the California state line. Death Valley is just beyond. Off the main road is a one-lane/one-way dirt road that ascends the mountains and then descends to Titus Canyon and Death Valley. With my rented SUV, I took this interesting detour.

Valley of Fire (Nevada) State Park

vf-20.jpg

I did an SUV tour of this beautiful state park, which is less than an hour's drive from Las Vegas. The "fire" refers to the red rocks and sand. Many interesting rock formations, as well as petroglyphs left by early denizens of the area, exist there to be photographed.

Rhyolite, Nevada

bank-2.jpg

Rhyolite became a ghost town after a brief heyday in the early 20th century. Only a couple hour drive from Las Vegas, it sits close to the California border, with Death Valley not far beyond. At one time, it was the second largest city in Nevada. However, it became too expensive to mine gold, and that killed the town. Here are some photos of what remains, including the bank building, which is one of the most photographed buildings in Nevada.

Steelers-Ravens Trip - Sept 2004

IMG_2875.jpg

After all these hurricanes and stuff, I was happy to get an invitation from friends David and Catherine to come up to the D.C. area to visit with them and catch the Steelers-Ravens game. Although the game was a semi-disaster for my beloved Steelers--for which I took my share of crap from Ravens fans--it was nevertheless a fun visit. I got to meet little Isaac for the first time. At the risk of making this gallery look like the David and Catherine's web site, which has 12,375.7356 pictures of Isaac, I took a bunch of pictures of him when he wasn't screaming his head off. Oh, and there are Hooters pictures here, too.

Still hurricane weary, I needed another quick getaway. I called my cousin in New York, who agreed to put up with me for a weekend. In this album, we have New York flora, fauna, sights, and, of course, waitress and bartender pictures. (Sorry, no Hooters pictures--I didn't make it to the Hooters on 57th Street.)

Pennsylvania - July 2006

pa-7-06-015.JPG

I headed north for a week or so to take the edge off the Florida summer heat, renting a cabin at Prince Gallitzin State Park in Central Pennsylvania. I enjoyed my week there and spent some time in Altoona (city of my birth), State College (where I attended Penn State University), and Pittsburgh (where I lived until age 14), as well.

Steelers-Ravens Trip - November 2005

IMG_1416.JPG

As an annual tradition, my football pilgrimmage to the Washington, DC area has several important features: 1) I get to see friends David and Catherine and Baby Isaac, 2) I get to see the Steelers lose in Baltimore every damn time I've seen them play there, and 3) I get to make the all-important post-game beer stop at Hooters at Baltimore's Inner Harbor. (Yes, Hooters photo fans, this time I've photographed Miss Ami.) All in all it makes for a nice one-day getaway and I can breathe a little cooler air for a change (except in Hooters). These are pictures from this year's edition--also featuring the Baltimore Ravens cheerleaders.

Steelers-Ravens - November 2006

ravens-steelers-06-058.JPG

Ahhh, the annual trip to Baltimore to watch the Steelers lose. You heard that correctly, folks. Every time I go to this game in Baltimore, the Ravens soundly defeat the Steelers. Even two years ago, when the Steelers went 15-1, this was the one game they lost. I was there. Last year, they went to the Super Bowl. They lost this game. I was there. This year, they have been off to a rotten start but thing had been looking up with two straight wins. They lost this game 27-0. I was there. Perhaps the Steelers will pay me to stay home next year!
