Rock Springs Run State Reserve - November 2007

Here are the pictures from our group hike in Rock Springs Run State Reserve. It was an interesting day for a few reasons, not the least of which was the fact that my camera broke, so you will see only half a hike's worth of photos. Another was that it was the day before the start of general gun season, so the hunters were out there staking out their territory. So was the law, to make certain that hunting season didn't start a day too early.

Wekiwa Springs State Park - November 2007

The first glorious hiking day of the year found the group reconvened at Wekiwa Springs State Park, with two new initiates to haze: Mike and Cindi. We had a beautiful 10 mile hike.

Beaver Stadium 1964

As I waxed nostalgic about the good old days at Penn State, I recalled that somewhere I had some old slides depicting Beaver Stadium. Here they are, coming at you from 1964. Beaver Stadium is still there, but it has sure as hell changed!

Wekiwa Springs State Park - September 2007

This is the first photo hike since my neck surgery, and what better a place than Wekiwa Springs State Park, just four miles from my house? I've always appreciated the fall wildflowers there. Blooming plants in great abundance today were partridge pea, blazing star, and summer farewell. Wildlife spottings included deer, gopher tortoise, turkey, and love bug. Oh, and butterflies. Thousands and thousands of butterflies.

Little Big Econ - July 2007

This might well be my last hike before I have surgery and can't hike for a while. Thus, it was good that I got out there this week, playing hooky from work. My friend Mike, and long lost friend Cindi, who is the ex-wife of Mike's ex-brother-in-law, joined me to see the tannin stained Econlockhatchee River and learn about Geocaching. It was a most enjoyable day, capped off by lunch at the Black Hammock Fish Camp.

Seminole State Forest - Late June 2007

Last night, Bob apprised me that the forest had reopened. Soooo, I got up early and hit the trail at around 7:15 AM. I had a serene hike and checked on some Geocaches. Everything seems to have survived the recent wildfires quite well. The forest had been closed for about two months.

Sabal Point Sanctuary - June 2007

A summer hike is usually a pain in the ass because of the heat and humidity. Today was tolerable, however, and though the hiking group suffered from attrition, Jenny and I had great fun bushwhacking to the Wekiva River.

Sabal Point Sanctuary Reprise - May 2007

Well, this prednisone has me wired. I have to put my boots on. Today, I found myself around the corner from my house in Sabal Point Sanctuary, where there is always a convenient, 7-mile hike. The mercury barely cracked 80 and there was a nice breeze, so it was good.

Rock Springs Run State Reserve - May 2007

So, like it was a lazy Saturday and I decided to go up to Seminole State Forest to check on my Geocaches there. A large brush fire had burned in the vicinity. However, when I got there, the forest was closed. Quite rude of a forest to be closed, you know. With my hiking shoes on, however, I was not to be denied. I went a little further down the road to Rock Springs Run State Reserve and had a nice nine-mile hike.

Wekiwa Springs State Park - May 2007

A blessed cold front chilled the May temperatures about ten degrees lower than normal, so it was a perfect day for a hike in my favorite state park, which is only a few miles from my house. In tow were Jenny, RD, and aging hiking wonder dog Cosmo.

Sabal Point Sanctuary - May 2007

It was a hot day, and Jenny declared that she had to hike in a shady place. Sabal Point Sanctuary fits that description, being an old cypress forest that was pretty much logged out in the last century. But, being a swamp, stuff grew in and it is, in fact, shady. Only Jenny, Don, and I made it. Due to the smoke in the air, Marcos and RD begged off.

Seminole State Forest - April 2007

I needed to do some Geocache maintenance in Seminole State Forest, which was a great excuse to hike 11+ miles on a warm spring day. I'm all kindza sore this morning, but what the hell--it was a great hike!

View from the fire pit69 viewsWhat I didn't know about Jenny is that she is a pyromaniac. Once she discovered that dry palmetto fronds burn quickly and spectacularly, she started frequently disappearing from the campfire into the woods surrounding the campsite from which I would hear rustling sounds, and after each journey she returned with an armful of palmetto fronds. She then stuffed them into the fire, where they would quickly ignite and shoot flames four feet into the air, to the gleeful appreciation of Miz Jenny.
RD Does His Sinkhole Pose48 viewsIt was just a beautiful day for hanging out in a sinkhole. Look at dat sky!
Here's where we decided to abandon the "road" and bushwhack through the swamp52 viewsWe all concluded that anything would be better than the caesarweed and deadfall, not to mention the rampant poison ivy. Here, we see Don picking caesarweed burrs off his shirt. He was able to get all but a few thousand. Meanwhile, Marcos was complaining, "This is not hiking. Get me out of this hellhole."
Lyonia in bloom58 viewsI didn't need my wildflower book to declare that this is a shiny lyonia, aka fetterbush. They're all over the place around here!
Grandfather Mountain82 viewsThis is another Jennyshot, through the car window.
On Appalachian State Campus80 viewsJenny poses next to her favorite chlorophyll-free plant, Indian Pipes (soon to be known as Native American Pipes). (Hey, wait a minute! The implication that Native Americans smoke bongs is not politically correct.)
